About Mr. Davidson and Edison Social Studies
On Stage At WE Day Seattle 2016!
Hi there, thanks for stopping by! My name is Ben Davidson and I am lucky enough to be able to teach 7th and 8th grade Social Studies at Edison Elementary School. I coach 7/8th grade basketball at Edison and 7/8th grade district track. I am also the ASB Adviser at Edison. When I do find a little free time, I love to get outdoors and go wakeboarding, golfing, hiking, and snowboarding. I also really enjoy traveling, especially to Europe, where I was able to study abroad during college.
I am a product of the Burlington- Edison School District as I attended Bay View Elementary and then Burlington- Edison High School before heading off to Western Washington University. Please feel free to peruse my site! Check out the "useful links" tab for some Social Studies resources. The German flag at the bottom will take you to the blog that I wrote for Edison's exchange to Hamburg during the summer of 2016.
I really enjoy all aspects of history as it is incredibly interesting to discover how all of the events in the past have combined to create the world and society that we are all a part of today. In order to understand the present, and why things are the way they are, it is essential to understand the past!
During 7th grade, we look in depth at Washington State History from its time as a remote territory through its emergence as a technological mecca. We'll begin the year with an in depth look at the Five Themes of Geography. We'll apply these themes to a study of the complex geography and geology that comprise the great State of Washington. We will also consider the role that our unique natural environment has played in our states development as well as its current impact on the region. We will take an introductory look at economics as well as our interconnected relationship with some other Pacific Rim Countries.
In 8th grade, we look at the emergence of the United States as a whole. From early explorers to European colonization and the successes and perils it brought with it. We will look in depth at the first Thirteen Colonies and causes that led to the Declaration of Independence and the struggle to truly attain that sovereign status in the Revolutionary War. We'll explore the fundamental aspects of how our government is structured and why. We'll pay particular attention to the Bill of Rights. The Industrial Revolution will be studied as well as how this era began to divide North and South. The oft forgotten but very important "second war for independence", the War of 1812, will be examined as well and its role in vaulting Andrew Jackson to national prominence. Jacksonian Democracy will be discussed as we prepare to discover the causes and effects of Westward Expansion while paying particular attention to the ideas of "Manifest Destiny" and "Cultural Imperialism". We'll conclude 8th grade with an in depth study of the differences that led to the secession of the Southern States and the outbreak of the Civil War, the war itself, and the resulting era of Reconstruction.
My goal in addition to passing on curricular knowledge is to help prepare our students for future success at the high school level and beyond. For this reason, I, as well as the rest of the Edison 7/8th grade team, have high expectations with regard to classwork, behavior and personal responsibility. Edison students never fail to rise to these expectations however!
